What a Decade it’s Been

I will be heralding in this new year holding my breath. There are a couple of young men in my life facing epic health battles. Their struggles, and their families pain as well are looming large in my heart this New Year’s Eve. My prayer for 2020 is for some miracles.

The Decade That Was

When this decade began I was a burnt out old woman, desperately trying to sell an Internet company that was slowly killing me. I was a quarter of a million dollars in debt to a bunch of cheap plastic things precariously balanced on about a thousand rooftops, which is exactly how the banks described my business. One puff of wind could literally ruin me. Miraculously, the decade rang in with a buyer, and I was saved. When the dust settled on the sale of the company, the stress didn’t leave like a popped balloon, but rather oozed out slowly like a tarry poison. It’s taken a decade to recover.

I reviewed this past decade by re-reading my own blog. It was an epic time. An anniversary hike on the East Coast Trail of Newfoundland led to a chick trip on the West Coast Trail of Vancouver Island. Soul searching along the Camino de Santiago in Spain prepared me for a month in the Himalayas of Nepal. Beaches and a wedding in India were most unexpected, while a  flooded Amazon rain forest in Peru led to a reluctant Ray driving me through Africa. We even have a new home in Victoria and an addition to the family, Tucker. Our little Westie took us coast to coast to coast this decade, logging almost 40,000 miles. It was ten years of healing, growth and adventure.

New Year Resolutions

No matter how cliche, we all make New Year Resolutions, and here are mine:

I’ve come to discover the value of my friends and family. I’m going to covet those relationships with the intensity they deserve as you are the essence of my life.

I’m investing heavily in my health these days.  Quality of life is everything now. I feel so much healthier than I was when this decade began, and I appreciate that. I plan to selfishly indulge in hiking, swimming, cycling, yoga and sleeping, and try to indulge a little less in wine.

In writing this post I realize that my blog is a mess. Writing the Traillady blog is one of my great pleasures and I plan to invest a little more time in the structure and analytics of the blog, take the whole thing a little more seriously. If you do follow any of the links above, you’ll see what I mean. I promise to work on that.

May the new year bring you all health, happiness and miracles.

Happy New Year!
